By amplifying local voices through history, art, and shared narratives, they inspire future generations to embrace their heritage and envision a brighter, more equitable future.

The Hertford County African American History Coalition
Founded in 2018, the Hertford County African American History Coalition collects, documents, and celebrates the contributions of African Americans in and around Murfreesboro, NC. A vital initiative of The Cultivator is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and promoting the rich heritage of African American communities in Northeastern North Carolina.
Our historic marker program has placed five signs since 2019. The HCAAHC meets monthly both virtually and in person.
Through educational programs, oral history projects, exhibitions, and community partnerships, the coalition ensures that local stories and contributions are recognized and honored.
By engaging youth and adults alike in meaningful conversations about history, identity, and justice, the coalition fosters awareness and pride in cultural heritage.
Aligned with The Cultivator’s values of literacy, storytelling, and inclusion, the African American History Coalition strengthens community connections and ensures that these stories continue to inspire future generations.
The Revolutionary Women of Hertford County
The Cultivator and the Hertford County African American History Coalition are proud to have created The Revolutionary Women of Hertford County, an exhibit opened in 2026 at The Freedom Players Youth Theatre in Ahoskie. This exhibit is honours 250 years of incredible Hertford County women!

Since 2021, The Cultivator has proudly hosted an annual Juneteenth Freedom Day Festival in Murfreesboro, NC, celebrating African American history, culture, and resilience. This vibrant community event brings people together for a day filled with live music, dance, art, food vendors, and educational activities that honor the significance of Juneteenth and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice.
The festival showcases local artists, storytellers, and small businesses, fostering a spirit of unity and reflection.
