Rural Literacy

The Cultivator is proud to promote a love for reading through three essential initiatives: the Book Mobile, the Bookstore, and the annual Roanoke Chowan Literary Festival. Together, these embody The Cultivator’s mission of rural literacy, creativity, and storytelling.

The Roanoke Chowan Literary Festival

The Cultivator’s Annual Literary Festival is a vibrant celebration of storytelling, literature, and the arts. This event brings together authors, poets, and creatives from across the region to share their work through readings, panel discussions, workshops, and performances. Designed to inspire readers and writers of all ages, the festival offers activities for children, writing contests, and opportunities to connect with local and regional talent.
Rooted in The Cultivator’s mission to promote literacy, creativity, and community engagement, the Literary Festival fosters a love for reading while encouraging diverse voices and stories. This dynamic event invites everyone to explore the transformative power of words and reminds us that literature can both reflect and shape the communities we live in.

The Cultivator Book Mobile

The Book Mobile is a traveling library that brings books directly to children, families, and seniors throughout Northeastern North Carolina. Visiting rural communities, schools, parks, and festivals, the Book Mobile ensures that everyone—regardless of location— has access to high-quality literature. With books available for all ages and interests, it fosters a culture of reading, ignites imaginations, and promotes lifelong learning. Aligned with The Cultivator’s commitment to education and equity, the Book Mobile breaks down barriers to access, ensuring that stories, knowledge, and creativity reach every corner of the region.
